One of the most beautiful Mediterranean islands Vido has had a special meaning to Serbs for over 90 years. Historical necessity of WWI forced Serbian army, all state institutions, and part of population to stay on Corfu after retreat across Albania. It is well known fact for majority of visitors even before they arrive on island, but only with direct confrontation with monuments and testimonials of that tragic and at the same time glorious period, a Serb goes through transfiguration. He becomes a pilgrim. These are the words of Čedomir Todorvić, printed on Corfu in 1917.
Due to tradition established in 1993, visit to downtown museum dedicated to Serbian army dwell on that island is necessary. Soon after it was opened, museum was named “Serbian house”. On 22nd of May in 1993, thought, initiative and diligent endeavor of the Association for preserving traditions of liberation wars of Serbia until 1918 was realized. It was a day when priceless friendship between Serbian and Greece people was proved once again. In the mere center of Corfu city, in street Mustaksida 19, one splendid, baroque style building was given to Serbian people for usage in the next 99 years. Corfu mayor of that time Hrizantos Sarlis was most meritorious for such a precious present. On this occasion, he said: “This house should become sanctuary of glorious Serbian history and great fundament of friendship between Serbia and Greece.
Restoration of the building and decoration of the museum were done with Serbian state fundation. Serbian house is built by an architect, deceased Sreten Bata Đorđević.
Museum postulate was organized by a history professor and former colonel Milorad Prelević.
All that wouldn’t be possible without genuine, perhaps crucial support of Military museum.
